Vacqueyras ( Occitan : Vacairaç ) is a southern French community and a wine-growing region of the southern Rhone with 1,308 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Vaison-la-Romaine in the Arrondissement of Carpentras . The community is located on the southern edge of the Dentelles de Montmirail , approx. 18 km east of Orange and 12 km north of Carpentras at an altitude of 147 m .
history
Finds from prehistoric and Roman times show that the area of Vacqueyras has been inhabited for a long time. The church is mentioned for the first time in 1137 as belonging to the diocese of Orange. At that time the village was called Vachairas or Vacairaz . In the 15th century the community received a city wall.
Largely self-sufficient until the 18th century , the cultivation of olives and wine increased steadily at this time due to the emerging trade connections . In addition, the city wall is temporarily used to raise silkworms . After the devastating frosts of 1929 and 1956, the olive trees froze to death, creating an almost monoculture with grapevines.
Viticulture in Vacqueyras
The Vacqueyras wine region was given the status of Appellation Côtes du Rhône Villages on August 25, 1967 . On February 22, 1990, Vacqueyras received its own appellation d'Origine Contrôlée and has been on a par with Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Gigondas ever since . The AOC Vacqueyras, which is spread over the municipalities of Vacqueyras and Sarrians , has 1,300 hectares of vineyards, which are cultivated by 175 winemakers. 130 winemakers are affiliated with the local cooperative , the remaining 45 winemakers are self-marketers. In 2001, 48,500 hectoliters of wine were harvested. 96% of the harvest are red wines , 3% rosé wines and only 1% of this is white wine . The AOC regulations allow a maximum yield of 36 hl / ha. The grape varieties Grenache (at least 50%), Syrah , Mourvèdre (both at least 20%) and Cinsault (maximum 10%) are permitted . The grape varieties Grenache Blanc , Clairette Blanche , Bourboulenc , Roussanne , Marsanne blanche and Viognier are grown for white wine . The red wines have a shelf life of five to seven years.
Attractions
At the top of the hill, part of the city wall adjoins the church. The church was struck by lightning in 1585 and a hurricane a hundred years later and rebuilt in the 19th century.
Two kilometers east of the village, in Montmirail, you can visit the buildings of the former thermal facility from the 19th century, which was known for the purifying effect of its water. The spa town's reputation was once so great that celebrities like Frédéric Mistral and Sarah Bernhardt stayed there. The plant ceased operations over fifty years ago.
