Sarrians is a French village with 6065 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Monteux in the Carpentras arrondissement .

geography

Sarrians is located 15 kilometers southeast of Orange and eight kilometers northwest of Carpentras on the D 950 in the Brégoux Valley .

history

Grave finds in the 1980s from the Neolithic indicate that the region around Sarrians was already settled around 2400 BC. Based on other archaeological finds (coins, graves) it is known that the Romans also settled in the area of ​​Sarrians.

The present place had its origin in the second half of the 11th century. The place developed around a monastic settlement that goes back to William I , Margrave of Provence and liberator from the Saracens at the end of the 10th century .
