history
Shortly before the beginning of the Gallo-Roman period, the area was populated by the Celtoligur tribe of the Memini . The Romans drove out the locals and settled the country until the 4th century AD.
After the collapse of the empire of Charlemagne , Loriol was administered successively by the Counts of Provence , the Counts of Toulouse and finally Barral from the House of Baux .
At the beginning of the 14th century, Aimard de Poitiers sold his castle and manor to Guilhem de Clermont, a nephew of Pope Clermens V. The fief remained in the possession of the Clermont-Lodève family until 1363, who passed it on to the Astorg de Peyre family by marriage . After the Hundred Years War , the area was ravaged by marauding mercenaries. The residents left the village and sought refuge in the safe city of Carpentras.
After a slow resettlement, the fiefdom was divided into four co-owners in 1772. In 1830 Loriol had 452 inhabitants, of which only a tenth were born outside the village. In 1918 it was renamed Loriol-du-Comtat to distinguish the community from Loriol of the same name in the Drôme department.
Place name
The place name developed from the Latin Auriolus or Aureolus , which means something like "golden". In Occitan , auriol is also used to denote the yellow-colored oriole ( Oriolus oriolus , in French loriot ).
