Saint-Marcellin-lès-Vaison is a French municipality with 312 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Vaison-la-Romaine in the Arrondissement of Carpentras .

geography

Saint-Marcellin-lès-Vaison is about two kilometers east of Vaison-la-Romaine in the north of the Vaucluse department. Other surrounding communities besides Vaison are Saint-Romain-en-Viennois , Entrechaux and Crestet . The next major city is Carpentras in the south, 20 km away .

The community is located northeast of the Dentelles de Montmirail rocky landscape . The Ouvèze River forms part of the southwestern municipal boundary. The Lauzon flows along the north-western border and flows into the Ouvèze as a right tributary.

At 3.56 km², the area of ​​the municipality is one of the smallest in the Vaucluse department.

The western part of the municipality is touched by the route départementale D938, which leads from Vaison-la-Romaine to Carpentras. The D205 branching off from there goes on an east-west axis across the village in the direction of Faucon .

history

Several important finds indicate a Roman presence. There were probably numerous Roman villas at the site, which is fairly close to Vaison-la-Romaine .

The place was mentioned for the first time in the twelfth century. Saint-Marcellin-lès-Vaison was at the time a feudal estate with a wall fortress and simple houses.

In the course of the establishment of the departments, the municipality was integrated into the Nyons district in the Drôme department . Before that she belonged to the Comtat Venaissin . In August 1793 it was incorporated into the Vaucluse department.
