geography

Le Barroux is halfway between Carpentras and Vaison-la-Romaine . The village lies above the Comtat plain in the Brégoux valley .

history

The origins of the village go back to the 11th century. It developed around the castle, which served as a guard and customs post on the border between Provence and Dauphiné . Henri de Rovilhasc ordered the construction of the Renaissance castle, which was built between 1539 and 1544. In the event of an attack, the inhabitants fled there or in the Romanesque church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste ( John the Baptist ). The church was expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries. The church choir is adorned with a series of 17th-century wood panels depicting scenes from the life of John the Baptist. Between 1775 and 1903 there was a hospital in the village ; today the building is a residential building. Outside the village is the Saint-Christophe chapel and the remains of an aqueduct from the 19th century.

The foundation of the new Abbaye Saint-Madeleine Benedictine monastery began in 1970. On September 24, 1995, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger celebrated a Tridentine Rite service there .
