history

Foundation in Bédoin

When the Benedictine Gérard Calvet (1927-2008) returned to his parent monastery Tournay (subsidiary of the Benedictine Abbey En-Calcat ) after five years in Brazil in 1968, everyday life at the convent had changed so much as a result of the Second Vatican Council that he was looking for finally settled in Bédoin in 1970 and founded the Sainte-Madeleine priory, following a way of life appropriate to him via the intermediate stations of Benedictine Abbey Fontgombault , Carthusian Monastery of Montrieux and Montmorin . Young postulants who were also striving for the pre-conciliar way of life reported there.

Exclusion from the congregation and transfer to Le Barroux

The convent initially had the support of the Tournay mother monastery, but lost it in 1974 due to Bédoin's leaning towards Archbishop Lefebvre , who ordained all priestly from 1974 to 1987. In 1975, Bédoin was excluded from the Benedictine Congregation of Subiaco , but continued to grow and built the Sainte-Madeleine monastery in neighboring Le Barroux. In 1981 they moved there.

Return to the bosom of the Church

At the invitation of the Vatican (in Motu proprio Ecclesia Dei ) they separated from Archbishop Lefebvre in 1988 and returned to the bosom of the Roman Catholic Church. Part of the convention refused to take this step and resigned. In 1989 the monastery was elevated to an abbey and Calvet was elected abbot. In 1995 Cardinal Ratzinger visited the monastery. Louis-Marie de Geyer d'Orth has been the abbot since 2003. The convent has almost 50 monks (average age: 45). Today, Le Barroux is one of the most famous ancient ritualistic monasteries in France and is still closely linked to the French traditionalist milieu.
