history
On the night of May 1st to May 2nd, 1794, strangers uprooted a tree of liberty and destroyed decrees of the National Convention that were hung on a plaque in front of the parish hall. The Revolutionary Court then traveled to Bédoin and pronounced 66 death sentences , which were immediately carried out by the guillotine . The population had to pay a new revolutionary tax, the houses in the village were set on fire, the agricultural land was made unusable with salt, the village "Bédoin l'Infâme" was struck off the map, and the rest of the population was deported to the neighboring villages and under house arrest posed. The reign of terror ended two months later . On May 4, 1795, the village was rehabilitated and a memorial was erected in the main square to commemorate this tragic event.
