Saint-Didier is a French commune with 2,144 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Pernes-les-Fontaines in the Carpentras arrondissement .

location

Saint-Didier is east of Avignon , not far from Carpentras and Pernes-les-Fontaines . The village is located at the foot of the Monts de Vaucluse , southwest of Mont Ventoux .

history

In 1160 Franco , Bishop of Carpentras bought the fortifications from Raymond V from the Count of Tholosen . The name S. Desiderii first appeared here. In the Renaissance there were various lords of St. Didier, namely the Thézan, the Venasque , the Seguin-Vassieux , the Guesc , the Modène , the Raffélis de Tertulle and the Chaylus .

Attractions

In the neighboring communities of Carpentras and Monieux , three dedicatory inscriptions were found for the Gallo-Roman local god Mars Nabelcus .

Thézan Castle with its courtyard is located in the south of the municipality. The entrance portal and the staircase have passed since the Sept. 30, 1975 listed building , as well as the interior decoration of the banquet hall and the grand salons , and the fireplace in the reading room.

The 16th century church was redesigned in 1758 and has a covered passage at the bottom of the bell tower. The church building, the passage vault and the bell tower have been listed as a historical monument since November 21, 1973 .

The old monastery of Sainte-Garde-des-Champs dates from the 19th century . The side portal of the chapel contains a statue niche and has been listed along with the monastery building since April 23, 1981 .

The wash houses and fountains are also worth seeing. The fountain on the church square has been a listed building since October 28, 1949 .

There is also an open-air museum for “ decoy whistles , animals and truffles”.
