Bollène is a French city with 13,504 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Vaucluse department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It is the capital of the canton of the same name in the Arrondissement of Carpentras . It belongs to the Rhône Lez Provence municipal association .
geography
Bollène is located 17 kilometers northwest of Orange near the Rhône valley , whose tributary Lez flows through the municipality. The city is also on the Canal de Donzère-Mondragon with a large lock system .
history
On July 19, 1957, a serious railway accident occurred in Bollène : In the early hours of the morning, an express train from Nice to Paris was routed to a siding on an unscheduled basis . The corresponding switch connection should only have been driven at 30 km / h, but the train was still traveling at almost 100 km / h. The leading steam locomotive overturned. Escaping steam scalded some passengers in the sleeping car behind . A total of 31 people died and 69 were also injured.
Coat of arms and motto
The coat of arms shows a golden castle with three open gates on a blue background , above which a golden and silver key crossed.
The motto is: Concordia turris fortissima ("the unity, the strongest tower").

Villes et villages fleuris
Bollène is represented with two flowers in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (National Council of Flowered Cities and Villages). The "flowers" are awarded in the course of a regional competition, whereby a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.
Buildings
The André-Blondel hydropower plant was built by the architect Théodore Sardnal from 1949 to 1952. The main building was named after André-Eugène Blondel (1863–1938), a French physicist . It houses six turbine groups . The power plant is one of the first large industrial buildings in the French Fourth Republic . It is an example of the technical and architectural history of the post-war period. The building is listed in the supplementary inventory ( inventaire supplémentaire ) of the Monuments historiques (historical monuments).
Town twinning
Since 1994 there has been a town partnership with Alcúdia on Mallorca .
