Porte d'Avignon

Monteux is a French municipality with 12,909 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

location

Monteux is four kilometers from Carpentras in the heart of the Comtat Venaissin , twenty kilometers northeast of Avignon . The city is located in the lowlands southwest of Mont Ventoux , east of the Rhone and north of the Durance .

history

On the discovery place Bellegarde a Urn grave, broken pieces were a balm bottle , a clay lamp, a plate and a shell of Rotkeramik excavated.

The Renaissance period was marked by the Huguenot War and the plague. The main epidemics occurred from 1588 to 1589, 1630 and culminated in the Great Plague of 1721.

The Huguenots set fire to the Franciscan monastery in 1562 and then holed up behind the city walls of Monteux. They held the city until 1564 and only withdrew in favor of a truce.

During the French Revolution only the parish church was looted. During the siege of Carpentras in July 1793, the city served as a retreat for the army of Avignon.

In modern times, thanks to the construction of the Canal de Carpentras and the establishment of the ferry connection Avignon - Carpentras, intensive agriculture with vegetable and fruit growing has developed.

Events

Once a year, a well-known large fireworks display, the Feu de Monteux , is held in Monteux . In 2011, the fireworks had 25,000 paying viewers.

Sports

The women's soccer players of FCF Monteux played in the second highest French league for over a decade and a half in the 21st century .
