Feu de Monteux

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Feu (d'artifice) de Monteux ( French for fireworks from Monteux ) is a large-scale fireworks display that takes place annually in the municipality of Monteux in the south of France . The event has its origins in the fact that from 1921 the traditional fireworks manufacturer Lacroix-Ruggieri merged its production facilities in Monteux. As a kind of “compensation” for the risk of explosion, the local population was offered fireworks once a year. Even after the production facilities were relocated from Monteux, the tradition of annual fireworks continued.

The Feu de Monteux now takes place every year on the 4th Friday in August. Short-term postponements due to weather conditions are possible.

The motto of the fireworks in 2011 was Avec toi, Liberté (a quote from the French adaptation of Va, pensiero , the prisoner's choir from the opera Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi ). For the 55-minute musical spectacle in front of 25,000 paying spectators, twelve fireworks in 121 images - including numerous world novelties - fired a total of 30,000 rockets with more than a ton of powder.
