The Canal de Carpentras is an irrigation structure mainly located in the Vaucluse department ( France ) . For its establishment (1849-1857) its founder and first director, Louis Giraud , was from Napoléon III. appointed Knight of the Legion d'honneur .

The water is absorbed at Mallemort ( Bouches-du-Rhône ) from the Durance . The length of the main canal, which flows into the Aygues at Travaillan , is 69 kilometers. There are also secondary and tertiary canals with a total length of 725 kilometers. The canal network extends over an area of ​​10,600 hectares to be irrigated between Mont Ventoux in the north, the Rhone in the west, the Durance in the south and the mountains of the Vaucluse and the Luberon in the east.

A sum of 4,700,000 gold francs was required for the construction, one third of which was raised by state subsidies and two thirds by the beneficiary farmers.

In the centuries before the Canal de Carpentras was built, there were more or less advanced projects to irrigate the region. The first company mergers took place from 1849 and in 1853 the formation of a final association for the construction of the canal. On July 12, 1857, the canal was ceremoniously opened in the presence of Louis Giraud and Empress Eugénie .
