geography
Mérindol is located 18 kilometers southeast of Cavaillon and 15 kilometers northeast of Salon-de-Provence . The community lies on the Durance . and is part of the Luberon Regional Natural Park .
history
The old village was steeply on a slope. Around 450 years ago the settlers began to leave it and settled directly on the Durance. The place was strongly influenced by the Waldensian movement , which originated in Lyon around 1180 . The religious minority, who stood for a break with the previous traditions of the church, was persecuted. When urban preaching became too dangerous, the Waldensians withdrew to rural areas in France and Italy. The lords of Provence, which was sparsely populated at the time, were happy to welcome immigrants who could farm their land. Therefore, the Waldensians were able to withdraw to Mérindol, among other places. In 1530, Jean de Roma became the new inquisitor of Apt . Under his rule the Waldensians were suppressed and murdered, which in turn led to acts of revenge. In 1540, the “Mérindol Decree” stipulated that all those found guilty of heresy should be cremated alive. In just one week, eleven villages in the Luberon were devastated, killing two to three thousand people, a dozen of them in Mérindol. The majority of the population was able to escape to Switzerland.
