Ansouis is a French commune with 1,023 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Apt and the Canton of Pertuis . It is classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France ( Most Beautiful Villages in France ).
geography
Ansouis is located in the southeast of the Vaucluse department and is surrounded by the municipalities of Vaugines , Cadenet , Villelaure , Pertuis , La Tour-d'Aigues , Sannes and Cucuron . The closest town is Pertuis in the southeast ( 6 km ).
In the north of the municipality, the mountains of rises Luberon with the Luberon Regional Nature Park , to which the municipality belongs. South of Ansouis lies the Durance valley .
traffic
Several départementales routes intersect in the center of the village . The D56 coming north from Cucuron continues south-east to Pertuis. The D37 crosses the municipality on a southwest-northeast axis and provides access to the municipalities of Villelaure and Sannes. To the northwest you come to Cadenet and Lourmarin via the D135 . In the far east, the D9 from Cabrières-d'Aigues touches the municipality and continues to Pertuis. From here there is a junction of the D135 east to La Tour-d'Aigues .
The closest train station is Pertuis , which provides connections to the cities of Lyon , Marseille and Aix-en-Provence .
history
The Ansouis manor was first mentioned in the 10th century. It passed into the possession of the Sabran family in 1178, whose descendants resided in the castle until 2008. A settlement developed below the castle, which was surrounded by a new city wall in the 14th century. Ansouis has been known for growing cherries, plums, melons and beets since the 18th century.

Attractions
- Castle , former residence of the Sabran family (10th century). Originally built as a castle, rebuilt in the 12th and 13th centuries, further modifications in the 15th and 19th centuries. The current building dates from the 17th century and has two small garden parterres in Baroque style.
- Parish Church of St Martin (13th century).
- City fortifications
- Musée des Arts et des Métiers du vin . Private collection in the center of a winery. Over 3000 unique objects are shown in a recently renovated building. Old wine presses can be seen in a 400 m² hall.
- Musée extraordinaire de Georges Mazoyer . An underwater world was set up by an artist in a vaulted cellar from the 15th century.
