Bargème is a french commune with 217 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Var department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
The mountain village has been included in the list of the most beautiful villages in France by the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France .
geography
Bargème is 36 kilometers north of Draguignan, nine kilometers north of Comps-sur-Artuby and 30 kilometers south of Castellane on a rocky hill. With an average altitude of 1,097 m and a highest elevation of 1,589 m, Bargème is the highest town in the Var department. The municipality is part of the Verdon Regional Nature Park .
history
Archaeological findings indicate settlements from the Iron Age , from which tombs and jewelry originate, to the Gallo-Roman era .
In the year 814 the place appears for the first time as Bergemulu , later in 1026 as Bargema . From the 14th to the 18th century, the town was under the rule of the Pontevès and d'Agoult families . During the Huguenot Wars , numerous members of these families were murdered and their mansions destroyed.
Attractions
The townscape is dominated by the ruins of the feudal castle Pontevès from the 13th century, around which numerous other buildings from the high Middle Ages are grouped.
economy
Besides tourism, agriculture is the most important economic factor. Grain , lavender , various fruits and fodder are grown in Bargème . In addition, livestock is raised, cheese is produced and forests are cultivated.
