history

Even before the Romans settled in Pennafort , the area around Callas was populated by Celtic-Ligurian tribes. In 1030 the place was mentioned as Calars . In the 15th and 16th centuries Callas was a fiefdom of the von Pontevès family , after the murder of Jean-Baptiste de Pontevès by the population of the community, Callas was directly subordinate to the king.

St. Auxilius, Bishop of Fréjus in the 5th century , is said to be buried on the hill on which the chapel named after him stands today. In the 17th century he became the patron saint of the parish of Callas.

Attractions

  • Callas is a picturesque place that rises up on a hillside and is towered over by the ruins of the old castle. In the village you can discover cobblestone streets, vaulted alleys and passages, beautiful gates and inner courtyards. The houses in Callas already have the character of the Provencal pre-Alps: narrow, high facades with canopies and barns on the upper floors.
  • Only a few remains of the castle from the 13th century are left. Individual walls and the keep are still standing .
  • The bell tower with its wrought iron top dates from 1623.
  • The Gorges de Pennafort gorge is a few kilometers away.
  • The destroyed chapel Chapelle de la Trinité was recently rebuilt.
