Ampus is a French municipality with 934 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Var in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Draguignan and the Canton of Flayosc .

geography

Ampus is located 14 kilometers north of Draguignan at an altitude of 600 m above sea level. Not far away is the Nartuby Valley with the Gorges de Châteaudouble and a little further north the Lac Sainte-Croix and the Verdon Gorge .

Two thirds of the municipality's landmarks consist of mostly forested mountains, some of which exceed the 1,000 meter limit and largely belong to the Plan de Canjuers military area, or of sloping terrain that descends into the deeply cut Nartuby river valley and is planted with olive groves. The remaining third is cultivated highlands between 600 and 700 m above sea level, on which arable farming is carried out and the village is located.

A total of three quarters of the area are forested, mostly with oak forests and partly with pine forests. Black truffle grows in the oak forests of the area .

history

The name Ampus comes from the Latin emporium (market). In Roman times there was an important market on the plain.
