Ramatuelle

Ramatuelle is a French commune with 2,070 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Var in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Sainte-Maxime in the Arrondissement of Draguignan .

geography

Ramatuelle is a neighboring town of Saint-Tropez on the Côte d'Azur and is located at the eastern foot of the Massif des Maures . The place is located near the Bay of Pampelonne in the center of the peninsula of Saint-Tropez in a typical Provencal coastal landscape, which gives its special character to hills covered with pine trees and fertile plains. The territory of the municipality includes the beaches Escalet, Tahiti and the 4.5 km long beach of Pampelonne, which, with its area of ​​27 hectares, is one of the largest sandy beaches in Provence. The total length of the municipality's coastline from Cap du Pinet to Cap Taillat is around 20 km.

The medieval village

The townscape of the medieval village built on the flank of a hill is characterized by narrow, curved streets spanned by vaults and round arches, which spiral up the hill. Of the former fortifications, the gate from the 16th century, called the Saracen Gate, is still preserved in the east .

The parish church of Notre-Dame was built in the 16th century. The church tower, a former watchtower on which a campanile was later built, dates back to the 14th century. The 17th century portal originally belonged to the La Verne Charterhouse .

The area around Ramatuelles

  • The lighthouse Phare de Camarat is located on the 130 m high Cap Camarat . It was put into operation in 1831 and automated in 1977.
  • One of the dilapidated 18th century Paillas windmills named after the last miller Jean Baptiste Paillas has been restored.
  • The memorial of the Anciens des Services Spéciaux de la Défense Nationale (Friends of the former National Defense Intelligence Service) has been commemorating the deployment of resistance fighters from Ramatuelle during the last world war since 1959.

economy

The main sources of income for the municipality are viticulture and tourism , which are complemented by a wide range of craft, trade and commerce.

Wine growing in the Ramatuelle area can be traced back to the time of Greek colonization around 600 BC. Trace back to BC. On a total of 750 hectares of vineyards, three quarters of AOC Côtes de Provence wines and a quarter of Vin de Pays du Var are grown by a wine cooperative and five wineries . Ramatuelle is one of the few coastal communities that has maintained a lively and sustainable agriculture despite the expansion of tourism. Around 70% of the production consists of the rosé wine typical of the area , 25% are red wines and 5% white wines.

Origin of name

The origin of the place name is not clear, one hypothesis leads it back to the occupation of the area by the Saracens in the 9th century and derives Ramatuelle (formerly Ramatuella ) from the Arabic Rahmatu-Allah رحمة الله = "the grace of God".

Personalities

  • The British art photographer and filmmaker David Hamilton (1933-2016) bought a house in Ramatuelle in the early 1960s and made his first fashion photos there.
  • The French actor Gérard Philipe (1922-1959) was buried in the Ramatuelle cemetery.
  • The French actor and director Jean-Claude Brialy (1933–2007) initiated the Festival de Théâtre et Variété de Ramatuelle . He owned an estate in the parish.
  • The actress Romy Schneider (1938–1982) owned an estate with vineyards in the region.
  • The French singer Johnny Hallyday (1943–2017) owned his famous Villa Lorada here until 2000 .
