Gérard Philipe
Gérard Albert Philipe (born December 4, 1922 in Cannes , † November 22, 1959 in Paris ) was one of the most popular French film actors of his time.
Life
After a first role in 1942 in André Roussin's Une grande Fille toute simple at a boulevard theater in Lyon , Gérard Philipe became known through Sodome and Gomorrah by Jean Giraudoux , but above all in 1945 through Caligula by Albert Camus . In 1951 he joined Jean Vilars Théâtre national populaire , with which he had great success in Paris as well as at the Avignon Festival and on tours. He played a classical repertoire and performed several pieces by Alfred de Musset , but also by contemporary authors such asHenri Pichette and Jean Vauthier , self-directed. At the same time, because of his youth and his charisma, he celebrated triumphs with films by Christian-Jaque , René Clair and René Clément .
On November 29, 1951, Philipe married the ethnographer, writer and actress Nicole Fourcade (1917–1990), who later called herself Anne Philipe. Her daughter Ann-Marie, who is also an actress, was born on December 21, 1954; the second child, Olivier, was born on February 9, 1956.
Some called Philipe "darling of the gods" or "gifted actor". Even his political views, his preference for Russian film, his attempt to realize a Franco-Chinese production, and his collaboration with DEFA did not damage his career. As a politically interested actor, he took part in the Stockholm Appeal against Nuclear Weapons . In 1958 he became president of the Syndicat français des acteurs (SFA).
After his death from liver cancer , Gérard Philipe was buried - in accordance with his last will - in the small town of Ramatuelle , above the bay of St. Tropez, in the costume of El Cid . His widow was buried by his side in 1990. The school there was named after him.
Numerous theaters and cultural institutions bear the name "Gérard Philipe", including the Center Dramatique National in Saint-Denis , the municipal theaters in Orléans , Montpellier , Meaux , Calais , Champigny-sur-Marne , Saint-Cyr-l'École , Liège , Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Saint-Nazaire as well as the cultural center in Raguhn . In 1960 a cinema in Berlin-Treptow was named after him.
Father collaborator, son resister
In Grasse , his father Marcel Philipe collaborated with the German occupiers during World War II . He was manager of the Parc Palace, the meeting place of the Germans in Grasse, in addition, the regional delegate and member of the comité directeur of the Parti populaire français , one of Jacques Doriot for the department of Alpes-Maritimes founded party. On the other hand, Gérard fought in the Resistance in August 1944, during the uprising for the liberation of Paris . Marcel Philipe was imprisoned, first in Saint-Denis , then in Grasse. His son has tried to use his relationships to help him, but has only partially succeeded. His father managed to escape in 1945 (while his son was playing Caligula in Paris ); he went to Spain and was sentenced to death in absentia. After an amnesty, he returned to France ten years after the death of his son.
