  • 1959 : As part of the Mercury program , NASA takes a rhesus monkey Sam with the mission Little Joe 2 into space to test the functionality of the rescue system. The test is successful.

  • 1154 : Nicholas Breakspear is the first and so far only Englishman to be elected Pope and takes office under the name of Hadrian IV with the enthronement that takes place on the following day .

1872: Mary Celeste
  • 1872 : The cargo ship Mary Celeste is discovered as a ghost ship in the Azores on the Atlantic, drifting without a pilot. There is no trace of the people on board.
  • 1974 : A Dutch Douglas DC-8 carrying Indonesian Muslims on a pilgrimage to Mecca on board crashes over Colombo, Sri Lanka. All 191 people die.
  • 1977 : A hijacked Boeing 737 of Malaysia Airlines exploded for unknown reasons about Joho Bahrain, Malaysia. Every 100 people on board die.
  • 2009 : 113 people died in a fire caused by fireworks in a nightclub in Perm , Russia .
