The Chula – Thammasat traditional game ( Thai : งาน ฟุตบอล ประเพณี จุฬา ฯ - ธรรมศาสตร์ , also Thammasat – Chula traditional game - งาน ฟุตบอล ประเพณี ธรรมศาสตร์ - จุฬา ฯ ) is an annual soccer game between Chulalongkorn University and Thammasat University . The game is usually played every January at the Suphachalasai Stadium in Bangkok . In addition to the game itself, the focus is also on the choreographies of both universities, the cheerleading and the opening ceremony with a parade. One of the highlights of the parade is a political parody of Thammasat University. The entire event is regularly broadcast live on television.

history

The origin of the traditional game between the two universities goes back to 1934. Graduates of the Suan Kulab Wittayalai School , who were students of the Thammasat and Chulalongkorn Universities at the time, initiated this soccer game as a competitive comparison between these two universities. The traditional boat races at the two British universities of Oxford and Cambridge or the Japanese Keio - Waseda baseball game served as a model.

The first game took place on December 4, 1934 on the Sanam Luang . Thammasat University was the first host. The entry price at that time was 1 baht . The proceeds were donated to the Anti- Tuberculosis Society of Thailand. Even today, the proceeds go to charitable institutions. Both universities take turns hosting the game. From 1935 to 1937 the game was played on the soccer field of the Suankularb Wittayalai School. The game has been held at Suphachalasai Stadium since 1938 . Exceptions were 1985, 1986, 1988 and 2008. In those years the game took place in the Chulalongkorn University Stadium.

Since 1949 there has also been a trophy for the winner. It is called Royal Cup (German: Königlicher Pokal ).

Due to various political events, the game could not be played in some years. In 2008 the game was postponed for four months because of the death of Princess Galyani Vadhana , the king's sister.

The 2001 game included Kiatisak Senamuang , Surachai Jaturapattarapong and Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul .
