The Waseda University ( Jap. 早稲田大学 , Waseda daigaku in short, SODAI 早大 ) is adjacent to the Keio University one of the most prestigious private universities in Japan . It is located in Shinjuku , a district of Tokyo . Around 55,000 students are registered there.
founding
The school was founded on October 21, 1882 by the former samurai and later Japanese Prime Minister Ōkuma Shigenobu as a technical school Tōkyō ( 東京 専 門 学校 , Tōkyō semmon gakkō ); his statue is on the Nishi-Waseda campus. It was declared a full university in 1902. Large parts of the entire campus were destroyed during the air raids on Tokyo in World War II; the university was rebuilt and reopened in 1949.

Achievements and recognition
The university is famous for its literature department , which has Haruki Murakami , Ogawa Mimei , Machi Tawara and Naoki Yamamoto among its graduates. Some well-known politicians, e.g. B. Makiko Tanaka and former Prime Ministers Yoshiro Mori and Yasuo Fukuda were also students at the university.
The university was involved in the development of the WL-16 , a walking robot.
The rivalry with the Keiō University is particularly reflected in the annual sports competitions. The university baseball match is a national event.
