Tokorozawa ( Japanese 所 沢 市 , - shi ) is a city in the Japanese prefecture of Saitama , about 30 km west of downtown Tokyo .
geography
Tokorozawa is located in the central part of the Musashino Plain and is part of the Tokyo metropolitan area .
Much of Lake Sayama falls within the city limits and Lake Tama touches the southwestern part of the city.
history
During the Kamakura period , the city was affected by several battles that were part of the Genko War .
Tokorozawa is known as the "Birthplace of Japanese Aviation". Japan's first airfield was opened here in 1911. It served as a military base until the end of World War II and came under the control of the United States Armed Forces after the war . The United States returned Tokorozawa almost entirely to Japan in 1971, but retained a communications facility for the military.
Tokorozawa was officially named a Shi (Japanese 市 ) in 1950 and Tokureishi (Japanese 特例 市 ) in 2002.
The city served as a model for parts of Studio Ghibli's anime film My Neighbor Totoro , which was released in 1988.

The Tokorozawa- Matsuri is a festival with mikoshi , taiko drums and samba dancers, which is celebrated every year in October.
economy
During the Edo period , the industrial focus was on silk textile production .
Today the city is an agricultural market for the locally grown green Sayama tea . Other agricultural products include spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes, burdock, pears, and grapes. In addition, some large companies have settled in Tokorozawa. For example, Seibu Tetsudō has its headquarters there and Citizen Holdings operates a watch-making factory there.
The Area Control Center "Tokyo Air Traffic Control Center" is located in Tokorozawa and directs all air traffic for the regions of Kanto , Joetsu , Tohoku , Chubu , Hokuriku and part of Kinki .
Sports
Tokorozawa is home to the Saitama Seibu Lions baseball club and the Saitama Broncos basketball team . The Seibu Lions moved to Tokorozawa in 1978 and play at the Seibu Dome . The Saitama Broncos were founded in 1999 and play in the “Tokorozawa Municipal Sports Hall” ( 所 沢 市民 体育館 , Tokorozawa shimin taiikukan ).
