Kumagaya ( Japanese 熊 谷 市 , - shi ) is a city in the north of Saitama Prefecture .
geography
Kumagaya is north of Saitama and Kōnosu , east of Fukaya and west of Gyōda .
The Arakawa River flows through the city from southwest to southeast and the Tone River from northwest to northeast.
history
Kumagaya was a post office ( 宿 場 町 Shukuba-machi ) of the Nakasendō during the Edo period . On April 1, 1933, Kumagaya received city rights. On August 14, 1945, B-29 bombers flew the last air raid in the Pacific War on a Japanese city against Kumagaya.
