Kawagoe ( Japanese 川 越 市 , - shi ) is a Japanese city in Saitama Prefecture about 30 minutes by train from Tokyo .
history
Kawagoe, the seat of the fiefdom of the same name in the Edo period , was initially the administrative seat of the short-lived Iruma Prefecture , which included the southwest of what later became Saitama , after the fiefdom was abolished in 1871 .
In 1879, the joint district administration of the (later merged) Iruma and Koma districts was established in Kawagoe . When modern municipal regulations were introduced in 1889, Kawagoe became a district town ( machi ) in Iruma County.
Kawagoe was promoted to Shi on December 1, 1922 .
Attractions
Kawagoe is also known under the name Klein- Edo or Koedo ( 小 江 戸 ) after the old name for Tokyo. Major attractions include the Tokinokane Bell Tower and Kita-in Temple .
The castle Kawagoe was built in 1457 by Oda Doshin and his famous son Dokan on behalf of Uesugi Mochitomo. When Tokugawa Ieyasu conquered the Kanto region in 1590 , the Kawagoe - han fiefdom was established. Kawagoe was developed into a military base for the defense of Edo and at the same time served as an economic base for the transport of food and other goods to Edo.
