Call for Retribution (Original title: Next of Kin ) is an American action film directed by John Irvin from 1989 with Patrick Swayze in the lead role.

action

The policeman Truman Gates is a mountain man , he grew up in a large family in a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky . He now lives in Chicago and is married to the music teacher Jessie.

Truman was able to persuade his brother Gerald to move to Chicago as well. The rural relatives, however, do not believe that the two have left their home and now live in the "big city". Gerald finds a job in Chicago as a driver for a machine company. During a trip, Gerald is ambushed by members of the mafia who want to persuade the company owner to sell the company to the mafia. While Gerald's colleague can escape in time, Gerald refuses to cooperate with the gangsters. The gangster Joey Rosselini is not used to people in Chicago contradicting him and explains to the "hillbilly" that he has courage, but that he is very stupid. The situation escalates and Rosselini shoots Gerald in cold blood. Witness to the murder is Lawrence Isabella, son of mafia godfather John Isabella, because he was supposed to get to know the "workings of the family" during this attack.

When Briar Gates, brother of Truman and Gerald, learns of Gerald's death, he drives to Chicago to find his brother's murderer. Truman thinks it's a bad idea because he fears for Briar's life if he messes with the gangsters, but Briar doesn't let himself be dissuaded.

Jessie reveals to Truman that she is pregnant. She is later approached by a man on the street who pours red paint on her face. Behind the act is Joey Rosselini, who wants to warn Gates not to take care of the case.

Lawrence Isabella is later found dead. He was tortured before he died. John instructs Rosselini to find and kill his son's murderer. Since Rosselini presents him with Briar's weapon as the murder weapon, John thinks Isabella Briar to be the murderer of his son. In fact, Rosselini had previously stolen the gun from Briar's quarters and killed Lawrence himself with the gun. Rosselini then lures Briar into the premises of the company, which is now owned by the Mafia. Briar is seriously injured in an exchange of fire and later dies in the arms of his brother Truman.

Numerous members of the Gates family now make their way to Chicago armed. Meanwhile, Truman calls on Rosselini to face him face to face and arranges a meeting in a cemetery. There is a fight between Truman and Rosselini until Mafia godfather John Isabella arrives. He points a gun at the two and tells them to stop fighting. Rosselini moves aside, but instead of shooting Truman, John shoots Isabella Rosselini, knowing by now that he is his son's murderer. John Isabella then asks Truman if this would end the feud between the families. Truman replies in the affirmative.

Reviews

Rita Kempley wrote in the Washington Post on October 21, 1989 that Patrick Swayze appeared " believable " in the film . However, the shootings are not so numerous (" hasn't got the firepower ") that they could impress fans of the action movie genre.

Awards

Patrick Swayze was nominated for the Golden Raspberry for Worst Actor for his performance in 1990 (and for his performance in Road House ) .
