Road House is a 1989 American action film starring Patrick Swayze as a bouncer at a club .

action

James Dalton is a professional bouncer with a college degree in philosophy and a dubious past. He is known for solving conflicts between guests inconspicuously, but if necessary also hard and uncompromisingly. One day he receives an offer from Frank Tilghman, who runs the formerly successful but now run-down Double Deuce nightclub in Jasper , Jasper County , Missouri . There is scuffle between the guests here night after night, which has given the nightclub a bad reputation. As managing director, Dalton is supposed to keep things tidy and train the bouncers to stop the evening brawls.

After firing a few unreliable employees when he started work and instructing the others accordingly, Dalton quickly managed to gain respect from the guests and prevent fights in the restaurant. The word gets around and soon the Double Deuce will be full every evening.

Brad Wesley, who has risen to become the secret ruler of the small town with opaque machinations and extorted protection money from local businessmen with the help of his thugs , now also wants to benefit from the increase in sales of the Double Deuce . He sends a handful of thugs to the club to cause a stir. However, Dalton and his troops can kick them out.

In a fight, Dalton is injured by a knife and has to go to the local hospital to sew. In the process, he met the accident doctor Dr. Elizabeth Clay know. She visits him the following evening in the Double Deuce and witnesses him driving a rioter to the door. The two flirt and get closer that evening.

Brad Wesley is displeased with his people's unsuccessful attempts to get rid of Daltons and blackmail the owner of the Double Deuce , Tilghman. He summons Dalton and suggests that he take his side. However, Dalton refuses.

As Wesley and his men’s attacks on Dalton and the other businessmen in town become increasingly brutal, Dalton calls on his old “teacher” and friend Wade Garret for help. First of all, they can defend themselves from being attacked by Wesley's people. Garret persuades Dalton to give up and leave town because none of this is his business. However, when Wesley first blows up the farm where Dalton lives and then has Garret killed, which he announced to Dalton on the phone - as a voting decision between Elizabeth and Garrett - it becomes a personal war against Wesley for Dalton.

Dalton arrives at Wesley's house through a diversion with his Mercedes, which he clamps on the accelerator pedal. One by one, he kills Wesley's henchmen until he finally comes face to face with Wesley, who is armed with a revolver. Dalton can gain the upper hand, but waives the fatal blow when suddenly Elizabeth appears. Wesley wants to use this moment to shoot Dalton with a revolver. The town's blackmailed businessmen appear and fire their weapons together at Wesley. They then remove the traces of their participation in the action before the police arrive. The sheriff doesn't seem overly interested in solving the case, as the city is now freed from Brad Wesley's tyranny . The last scene shows Dalton and Elizabeth bathing and kissing in the lake in front of Wesley's ranch.

criticism

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of May 19, 1989 that Road House was “not a good movie”, but, if you approached it with the right attitude, “also not a boring one” (“This is not a good movie. But viewed in the right frame of mind, it is not a boring one, either. ").

"A primitive action film full of brutalities in itself, in which the best argument is a hard punched fist in the opponent's face."
