Ben Gazzara (born August 28, 1930 as Biagio Anthony Gazzara in New York City , † February 3, 2012 there ) was an American actor .

Life

His parents were Italian immigrants; Angelina Gazzara b. Cusumano from Castrofilippo and Antonio Gazzara from Canicattì , a carpenter. Gazzara first began to study engineering, which he broke off when he was admitted to a renowned drama school. He starred in the military drama Die A Man by Calder Willingham on Broadway . He later worked there in The Cat on the Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams .

He made his screen debut in the 1957 film adaptation of Die Like A Man . 1959 followed anatomy of a murder (with James Stewart , George C. Scott and Lee Remick ). After he had appeared mainly in television series in the 1960s, he took part in the 1969 war film The Bridge of Remagen . In the 1970s he starred several times in his friend John Cassavetes ' films , such as Husbands (1970), The Murder of a Chinese Bookmaker (1976) and Opening Night (1977).

After three nominations for a Golden Globe for the television series Race with Death in 1967, 1968 and 1969 and another three nominations for an Emmy in 1967, 1968 and 1986, he became with his fourth Emmy nomination in 2003 for best supporting actor in the film drama Hysterical Blindness excellent. In the course of his career, Gazzara also played theater again and again; In 1955, 1975 and 1976 he was nominated for a Tony .

From 1982 until his death Gazzara was married to Elke Krivat (Stuckman) for the third time. Before that he was married to Louise Erickson (from 1951 to 1957) and to the actress Janice Rule (from 1961 to 1979). He had a daughter with Rule.

Gazzara died of pancreatic cancer in 2012 at the age of 81 at New York's Bellevue Hospital Center .
