Julian Sands (born January 4, 1958 in Otley , Yorkshire , England ) is a British actor .

biography

Julian Sands enjoyed a classical acting education. He first caught on in a miniseries called The Sun So Rises . Another TV movie was A Married Man , where he starred alongside Anthony Hopkins . In the following years he had various smaller roles, including in The Killing Fields - Schreiendes Land .

Sands became more famous in 1985 when he portrayed Helena Bonham Carter 's lover in Rooms with a View . In the following years, Julian Sands was hired primarily for roles in horror films, including the Warlock series and the film Gothic (1986), a mixture of horror and erotic films. The final breakthrough came for Sands in 1990 when he portrayed the researcher James Atherton in Arachnophobia .

Sands remained true to his fondness for extraordinary film material, which he demonstrated in Boxing Helena (1993), in which he played a surgeon who amputated his beloved's arms and legs . In 1994, Sands was seen in the German film version of the book Mario and the Magician at the side of Klaus Maria Brandauer .

Sands has a special connection to the British director Mike Figgis , with whom he has worked on a total of five films. Among them was Leaving Las Vegas (1995), where he was seen alongside Elisabeth Shue . In 1998 he starred in the Italian film adaptation of Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Dario Argento . Under director Damian Harris , he played a psychiatrist in the erotic psychological thriller Mercy - The Dark Side of Lust (2000) with Ellen Barkin and Peta Wilson in the lead roles. In 2000 Sands was also seen alongside Milla Jovovich , Mel Gibson and Gloria Stuart in the Wim Wenders film The Million Dollar Hotel . In the same year he played with Gerard Depardieu and Uma Thurman in the film Vatel .

In 2002, Sands reappeared in the Stephen King's House of Damnation miniseries by Stephen King . He also continues to play theater and works for television. In the TV production Die Nibelungen from 2004, for example, he was also seen in the role of Hagen von Tronje .

In the 5th season of the dramatic action series 24 , he portrayed Vladimir Bierko in 2006 , who carries out terrorist attacks with deadly nerve gas.
