Framework story

Melinda Gordon is able to communicate with the spirits of deceased people (see after- death contact ). She helps the spirits and the living people, although she is often confronted with skepticism . Her husband Jim Clancy and her friend Andrea Marino (in the first season) support her. In season 5, she becomes the mother of a son named Aiden Lucas.

Melinda Gordon is the owner of an antique shop , but rarely has time to do so, as she often takes care of the ghosts' concerns, wants and worries. So it happens that Melinda's business partner and friend Andrea Marino often runs the business alone. After Andrea's death she runs the antique shop together with her new friend, Delia Banks (from season 2). After becoming a mother, Delia opens her own brokerage office across from Melinda's store.

season 1

For most of the first season, each episode of the series forms a self-contained plot. These always end with the spirit passing over into the hereafter . With the last two episodes and the season finale, the series experienced a bitter break with this tradition - obviously overwhelmed by success and fan base especially in the USA, CBS commissioned a second season and apparently changed the concept during the series. The episodes were now linked and new mysterious characters were introduced, such as: B. the mysterious black man (Romano), whose evil machinations Melinda is first referred to by Ely Fischer in the episode "Time of Wrath" before his passing. In “Your Last Dance” it becomes even clearer that there is now more and more of a coherent plot in the show - Melinda believes she has lost her skills and, towards the end of the season, realizes that the ghosts have disappeared, not her skills .

In the season finale, the completed change including cliffhanger takes place. The last episodes already indicated that more will be required of Melinda than to communicate with the spirit and bring it right with itself. A new task is initially shown by the fact that it cannot find out who it is at all - the ghost has died in its sleep and it is only at the beginning of the episode that it becomes aware that it is dead at all. Melinda later realizes, however, that it is obviously an airplane pilot - a stewardess joins them. Until the end of the first part of “The Chosen One”, Melinda deals with Andreas plans to expand the business and the architect who goes with it, as well as finding out basic information about the two ghosts.

It turns out that an aircraft is haunted through the airspace without a pilot and it is already nearby. It comes from Johannesburg , where Andreas brother is also staying, which is why she panics and wants to find out in his apartment whether he is in this machine. While Melinda tries to persuade the aviation authorities and surrounding airports to search for the plane (nobody believes the two of them when they call), it is already too late - while Melinda is on the phone with her husband, the plane crashes near the main road. Melinda is now faced with the aviation authority, which has some questions for her, and over 200 ghosts who don't know what happened to them. Romano now appears actively acting for the first time - he tries to catch the souls and tells them that Melinda is lying, in such a way that salvation is not waiting behind the light, only corruption and punishment can be found. He also promises the souls that if they dwell in this world, they could stay with their families and friends. At the same time he offers Melinda to send the souls over if she gives him her soul. She also discovers the wife of the architect who is supposed to be remodeling the shop among the dead - since, unlike the victims from the plane, she is not frozen and her little daughter is not with her, Melinda tries to find out how she died (she had already asked the architect if they would fly). It turns out that the plane has crashed into the car of the two - Melinda's husband finds the girl undamaged in the car under debris. The girl tells of a dream in which someone sent it back from the light - it is supposed to warn and encourage Melinda to take action against Romano, since she is "the chosen one". She has come across this sentence several times in recent times. Melinda convinces almost all dead souls from the plane to go into the light. However, a few go with Romano. At the end of the episode, you see Andrea, who cares about her brother, and Melinda in the antique shop. Suddenly he comes up to the shop, whereupon Andrea runs towards him, but is ignored by him. Here it becomes clear that Andrea was also hit by the plane in her car and died. Before a dialogue starts, Romano appears and concludes the episode with the words that Andreas' soul now belongs to him.

season 2

The second season began with Andrea almost believing Romano's lies and walking with him, but then listening to Melinda and turning to the light. The two friends say goodbye with Andreas' promise to wait "up there" for Melinda. Romano hardly appears in the next few episodes. Melinda, however, meets the widow Delia Banks and her son Ned and the two women become friends. Delia later works in Melinda's shop. Gradually ominous messages appear, all of which foretell the death of a loved one. Melinda is forced to tell Delia's son Ned about her gift, which he keeps to himself. When Delia's late husband Charlie shows up, however, she also lets Delia know about her secret. Ultimately, she gives her faith, but does not want to get involved in the spirit world. Unexpectedly, Melinda meets a man named Gabriel, who has the same gift as she, but prevents the souls from passing over for the evil side. It also condenses the visions and the five signs that point to a tragedy. Furthermore, one of the five signs says that a loved one is dying, whereupon Melinda is very worried about Delia and Jim. Melinda gets interpretations, five special children to gather around. She thinks it's her job to protect her. However, it turns out at the end of the season that these five children were supposed to come to her to save Melinda from death. In her near-death experience , she is about to cross over and sees her father waiting for her in the light.

season 3

At the beginning of the third season, Melinda is convinced that her father died after seeing him in the light. She is now looking for clues to find out what happened to him. In addition, the mysterious underground city is increasingly coming to the fore. Melinda is taken there several times during their encounters and makes contact with the "unsaved". Delia's son Ned is now in senior high school and more and more often "meets" ghosts, which he tells Melinda about. He asks her to keep quiet about his mother, because she doesn't believe in ghosts anyway and doesn't want anything to do with them. Jim also leads his first spirit into the light and learns how his wife feels about it. Rick's deceased wife, who was previously convinced by Gabriel to turn away from the light, finds her forgiveness after all and can “go over”. Gabriel, Melinda's supposed half-brother, still has obscure motives, but it quickly turns out that he “works” for the underworld. Her father Tom Gordon also plays a stronger role. Melinda is overjoyed to have found her father alive, but a remnant of suspicion remains. She checks him and later has to help him get rid of a ghost who tries to convince Tom to commit suicide in revenge. It is through this spirit that Melinda ultimately reveals the great secret about her father. At the end of the season, Melinda and her friends want to go on a trip. Rick notices that the group consists of six on the sunny day, but only five shadows are cast on the street by the sun. Melinda immediately recognizes the danger, but does not yet know who it is referring to.

Season 4

Season four begins with the near-death experience of a college professor named Eli, who uses the experience to communicate with the dead. However, he can only hear her and therefore needs help from Melinda in order to be able to deal with his gift. In episode 6, The Loss , her husband Jim is shot dead by a police officer, Detective Neely. In episode 7, Threshold to the Hereafter , Melinda sees Jim's ghost during the funeral service for him and advises him to go into the light. Jim does not want to leave Melinda alone and without further ado drives into the body of a recently deceased man. Melinda hopes she and Jim will get a second chance, but Jim can't remember anything. He carries on the life of his new body and therefore doesn't know who Jim is or was. Now he's Sam. Over time, however, his memories come back and Melinda fights for the love of the two. She accompanies him every step of the way and lets him live with her. By mid-season four, Sam and Melinda become a couple, and she tells him about her gift. When a ghost hunter comes to Grandview in the same episode, Sam reacts very dismissively. He doesn't believe in ghosts and thinks people who do are crazy. A few episodes later, Melinda and Eli want to help a sewer worker named Ben, who, like Sam, has been possessed by another ghost. Ben escapes into a sewer after overhearing how his wife wants nothing more to do with him, because she doesn't believe him that he is her deceased husband. In an accident, Ben accidentally opens a pipe through which vast amounts of water flow into the sewer. Ben can save himself, but Melinda, who has run after him, is trapped by the water. Dr. Bird sends Eli to save Melinda, but since he cannot swim, Sam has to swim to Melinda. While Sam almost dies underwater, he remembers his previous life: his death, his wedding to Melinda, the time they spent together. Melinda manages to save Sam at the last minute, and through the near-death experience, Sam is no longer Sam, but Jim. Jim's mind has now completely taken possession of him and he remembers his previous life again, but he has forgotten that he drove into Sam's body and lived on as Sam. Nor does he remember what it was like to be dead. At the end of the season, Melinda learns that she is pregnant. However, she has been pregnant for eight weeks. This means that her child is Jim's, which is why he asks her if she would like to marry him again. She is warned by visions not to let her boy whom she will have live in fear. She also finds the Book of Changes, in which some of the observers keep diaries of people who have died and come back to life, such as: B. Andrea, Eli and others. In the final episode, Melinda and Sam get married on the street where they met.

The case in the episode "Lost in the Dark" (Ball & Chain) was inspired by the abduction of Colleen Stan in Red Bluff .

The fourth season ran on February 27, 2009 on Kabel 1. On May 29, 2009, Ghost Whisperer went on cable 1 in the summer break because the remaining episodes of the fourth season were not yet dubbed . On August 7, 2009, the fourth season continued on Kabel 1. However, episodes from the third season were broadcast every two weeks in order to postpone the season finale to the end of the year.

Season 5

At the beginning of the season you can see the birth of Melinda's son Aiden Lucas. Aiden was the name of Jim's father. When Aiden Lucas is born, it only seems like he is dying because he turns blue and cannot breathe on his own. Time stands still and Melinda sees a young woman in the delivery room. Her name is Amber. She died in the room next door giving birth to her son. She thinks her son drove into Aiden Lucas and therefore visits him every year on the day he is born. Time jumps five years into the future. Jim is now a doctor in the local hospital and Melinda has to lead spirits out of the hospital into the light more and more often. It's Aiden's fifth birthday and Amber shows up again. She had a relationship with her former boss as an intern, became pregnant and consented in writing to an adoption by the boss and his wife, but decided against it shortly before her death. Melinda tells her that her son is still alive and that he was adopted by his biological father based on the contractual agreement. She follows Aiden and her son Taylor to a bowling alley, trying to convince Taylor that she is his mother. Taylor is frightened and Amber accidentally almost kills him. Melinda discovers that she can communicate with Aiden using his special ability - empathy - because Aiden can perceive and experience the feelings and experiences of people and spirits in his environment. Amber's grief over the loss of her son faded into his dreams and feelings on Aiden's birthday. That's why Aiden suddenly developed a fever on his birthday every year. A few episodes later, we learn that Aiden can not only see ghosts. He can see little magical beings that shine and like glittering things, the luminaries. Aiden calls them "his friends" and they have been giving him toys for weeks and visiting him every evening. His friends are made of pure light and are afraid of the shadows. For the first time it is mentioned that there are spirits who do not go completely into the light, but that part of them remain as "shadows". The shadows don't like it when you know about them. They drive into the bodies of other living people in order to communicate with people and often abuse these human "shells" as leverage, e.g. B. Eli's boss, who is blackmailed by the shadows and whose mother dies if he does not obey them. Melinda cannot see these shadows and Aiden's friends because her powers are not as strong as those of her son Aiden. By mid-season five, the Shadows realize that the Book of Changes is becoming more and more of a threat to them. They see to it that Professor Bedford's mother dies in order to put pressure on him to finally destroy the book. He wants to force Eli and Ned to give him the book by showing up at Delia's real estate agency with a bomb from the Vietnam War and taking them hostage . When Eli hands him the book, Delia and Eli flee the office. Professor Bedford realizes that the book apparently wiped itself out so it couldn't help the Shadows. But Ned just hid the book in time. The shadows get angry. Delia's brokerage office explodes and Professor Bedford dies. As a ghost, he now haunts Ned because he owns the book. One episode later, the college professor reappears after being haunted by the late daughter of the man whose car killed her fiancé, so that the two of them can get together so that her death would not be in vain. The shadows are becoming more and more powerful and more and more often take possession of the observer Carl. Jim and Melinda want to protect their son at all costs and tell him that there are no ghosts. Over time, the shadows become so powerful that they even take possession of Melinda (season 5, episode 22). Aiden is the only one who can save her. Although his parents told him that there are no ghosts, he continues to talk to them, but Jim and Melinda do not tell anything. When Melinda, occupied by the shadows, locks herself in her shop, Aiden calls "his friends", the light people, and their glow drives the shadows away. Melinda is herself again and Jim realizes that trying to talk Aiden out of his gift wasn't right.

The series ends with Melinda's words to Aiden: "You were my hero today." He replies: "Mommy, you are also a heroine."
