action

The banker Sam Wheat and his girlfriend, the artist Molly Jensen, have a happy relationship. Molly often tells Sam that she loves him, to which he almost always replies " ditto ", because he is of the opinion that the three words should not be overused. On their way home from a theater visit, Sam and Molly are ambushed by a mugger. A shot goes off in the scuffle and kills Sam, who sees himself bleeding and lying motionless on the ground. He realizes that he is now a ghost who can see and hear his environment but cannot interact with it and is no longer perceived by other people. In the hospital, he meets another ghost from whom he learns that the dead remain on earth as ghosts when they still have a task to complete.

Sam is always near Molly for the next few days, but cannot make himself noticeable to her. While Molly goes for a walk with Sam's best friend and work colleague Carl Bruner, Sam cannot follow her through the closed door and has to watch helplessly as his killer Willie Lopez breaks into Molly's apartment and looks for something there. When Molly comes home, Willie manages to leave the apartment unnoticed by her, but is followed by Sam to his apartment. Willie speaks to an unknown person on the phone and announces that he will go back to Molly's apartment to continue the search. Sam tries to hit Willie, but only hits nowhere and is not noticed by him.

On the way back he happened to see the store of Oda Mae Brown, a fortune teller and necromancer. However, this is apparently only a fraudster who pretends to be able to contact their customers to contact deceased relatives. During a session, Sam loudly expresses his displeasure with this farce - and is heard from Oda Mae, who is apparently a medium after all , but was previously unknown to her ability. Oda Mae doesn't want to know anything from Sam at first. However, he remains persistent and can finally persuade her to go with him to Molly to warn her about Willie.

To convince Molly, Oda Mae tells her numerous details from the past that Sam gives her and that only he can know, but Molly cannot believe that Sam still exists and wants to warn her. Nevertheless, she goes to the police, but is not taken seriously there. The policeman shows her the files of Oda Mae, which has already appeared several times through scams.

In the subway, Sam learns from an unfriendly ghost how one can influence the real world and move objects through concentration. This finally gives Sam the opportunity to make himself noticeable to a limited extent. He finds out that it was Carl who hired his killer Willie. Carl launders money for a drug lord in the bank . Sam was on the verge of discovering this and changed the access code of the bank account where Carl deposited the money. To get the new code, Willie was supposed to steal Sam's wallet. Now Sam causes Oda Mae to close the bank account with the drug money and donate the cashier's check to charity, which she does only reluctantly. When Carl realizes the account has been deleted, he receives a ghostly message from Sam and realizes that everything Molly told him about Oda Mae must be true. He visits Molly and learns that she saw the fortune teller at the bank that morning.

Fearing the revenge of the drug gang, Carl and Willie go to Oda Mae to get the cashier's check back. Sam warns them and tries to defend them and their sisters by throwing objects through the air. He panics Willie so much that he runs into a car and dies. His spirit is then taken by dark shadows. Sam rushes to Molly with Oda Mae. You can convince Molly that Sam actually still exists. Sam puts himself in Oda Mae's body and is dancing with Molly when Carl shows up with a gun. The two women flee to the attic, followed by Carl. Sam tries to stop Carl. This throws a hook in the direction of Sam, who swings back and breaks the window pane over Carl, whereupon a large shard falls down and kills Carl. Carl's ghost is also haunted by dark shadows.

At that moment a bright light appears and the women can see and hear Sam. At the same time it becomes clear that he has done his job and now has to leave for good. Sam takes a tender farewell to Molly and now tells her directly and for the last time that he loves her, whereupon she replies with "ditto". Then it slowly disappears into the light.
