action
first act
Banker Sam and artist Molly move into their first apartment in Brooklyn. The two are supported by Carl, Sam's best friend and work colleague. After Carl leaves the two of them to their new fortune, Sam and Molly find themselves fighting over the fact that Sam seems unable to pronounce the words "I love you" and prefers to just say "Ditto" instead. Before there can be a major conflict, however, Sam grabs his guitar and sings about his loved one with Unchained Melody . A tactic that he used time and again in the past to resolve conflicts.
At work, Sam notices irregularities on some accounts. Carl offers to help and takes over the case so Sam can go on his date with Molly. Sam leaves thanking them and meets Molly, who admits that she wants to marry him. The re-emerging "I-love-you / ditto" discussion comes to an abrupt end when the couple are threatened by an armed man who demands Sam's wallet. Instead of giving in, Sam decides to take on the stranger until a shot is fired. The robber escapes from the scene, but not before taking Sam's wallet and apartment keys with him. Sam sees Molly kneeling over a bleeding man - and sees himself in it. He realizes that he has been fatally wounded and is trapped as a spirit in the intermediate realm. He follows Molly, his lifeless body, and the paramedics to the hospital, where he meets another ghost who explains what happened to him.
Back at the loft, Carl helps Molly sort out Sam's things. After Carl leaves, the mugger who caused Sam's death breaks into the apartment and begins to search the apartment while Molly is in the shower. However, after he doesn't seem to find what he's looking for, Sam follows the man named Willie Lopez to his apartment and finds out that there is still someone behind him. In desperation, Sam visits the establishment of the spiritualist Oda Mae Brown, who exposes herself as a fraud. Miraculously, however, she actually has the gift of hearing Sam. He persuades her to contact Molly for him and warn her.
When the grieving Molly finds the spiritualist in front of her apartment, she is suspicious. She only begins to believe her when Oda Mae reveals private things that only Sam can know. Carl, who Molly tells about it, thinks Oda Mae is a fraud, but offers to investigate the matter and go to the address of the alleged Willie Lopez himself. Accompanied by Sam, Carl goes to Willie's apartment. There Sam learns that his friend Carl is responsible for his death. While Molly encourages herself to believe in the supernatural and to leave all doubts behind, Sam laments his helplessness and naivete at having been so wrong about his best friend. Meanwhile, Carl breaks into the loft, steals Sam's notebook with the account details and drowns his grief over the loss of his friend in drugs while trying to convince himself that Sam's death was not his fault.
Second act
At the police station, Molly learns that Oda Mae already has a criminal record for multiple frauds. When she tells Carl about it, Carl reinforces her insecurity. When Carl tries to get close to Molly, Sam manages to channel his anger and tosses a picture frame to the ground. Surprised and terrified, Molly asks Carl to leave.
In the subway, Sam meets another ghost who can move objects at will. Sam asks his help and finds out how he can use his anger to make a difference. Meanwhile, Oda Mae is besieged by all sorts of spirits and their relatives. However, she is far from pleased with this situation. After one of the ghosts enters her body to talk to his remaining wife, Oda Mae has had enough. She then banishes everyone. When Willie goes to her parlor to silence her, Sam helps her chase him away. In a panic, Willie runs into a car and dies. Instead of entering the intermediate world as a ghost, Willie's soul is gripped by shadows and goes straight to hell. Sam has a plan how to stop Carl - and he needs Oda Mae's help for that.
Molly tries to accept and close with Sam's death. Meanwhile, Sam and Oda Mae make their way to the bank to withdraw the $ 10 million stolen from Carl before it is transferred to Carl's creditors. The plan is working. Before the two of them leave the bank, however, Sam decides to pay his former friend Carl a visit to his office and teach him to fear. Carl, who no longer understands the world, discovers that the account has been closed and his money has disappeared. Before he can do anything about it, Sam begins to devastate Carl's office by an invisible hand in front of his eyes. With a cashier's check for $ 10 million, Oda Mae dreams of a better life.
Sam suspects that Carl will now take revenge on Molly and instructs Oda Mae to warn her. Oda Mae allows him to use her body to touch Molly one last time. Carl uses force to gain entry to the apartment and threatens Molly and Oda Mae with a gun. In the scuffle with Oda Mae, a shot goes off and Carl dies. He sees Sam in the intermediate world and asserts that he never wanted his death. Shortly afterwards Carl is dragged to hell by Schatten.
The two women can now see Sam and he says goodbye to Molly for good. Before going into the light, he says the words she has been waiting for all her life: "I love you".
