Willemijn Verkaik (born June 16, 1975 in Son en Breugel ) is a Dutch singer , musical actress and actress .

Life

Willemijn Verkaik grew up in Nuenen near Eindhoven. In 1999 she completed her studies in pop and jazz singing at the Rotterdam Conservatory as a lecturer and performer. Verkaik completed her skills with the singing courses "Estill Voice Training System" and "The Complete Vocal Technique". She also took acting classes with Jonna Coolen, Gosschalk van den Ende, Guildford School of Acting and Mara Otten. She is fluent in Dutch , English and German .

After Verkaik had been active as a singer in various pop bands for more than ten years , she saw the time for a change. In 2000 she began her musical career in the ensemble of the Dutch production of Elisabeth . In 2001 and 2002 she toured the Netherlands with the theater group "JEANS", in which she was one of the soloists. In 2003 she played the second cast of "Queen Anna" and "Mylady de Winter" in the Dutch musical production 3 Musketeers .

The orchestra of the Dutch Air Force staged a world premiere in 2004 with “Eternity” in which Verkaik interpreted the leading role of “Barbara”. At the end of the year she went to Cologne, where she was seen in the Queen musical We Will Rock You in the roles of "Scaramouche", the "Killer Queen" and as "Ozzy". In the summer of 2006 she also played the title role in the open-air production in Thun in the musical Elisabeth , where Oliver Arno and Philipp Hägeli were also represented in the cast. From autumn 2006 to the end of July 2007 she took on the role of "Killer Queen" again in We Will Rock You in Cologne .

From autumn 2007 to January 6, 2010 she was the first cast of "Elphaba" on stage at the German premiere of Wicked - The Witches of Oz with Lucy Scherer in the Palladium Theater Stuttgart.

In addition to her role as the witch "Elphaba", she played the role of Amneris in the musical Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice at the Freilichtspiele in Tecklenburg in summer 2009 . On December 13th and 14th, 2009 Verkaik stood together with DMJ, Dominique Aref and Mathias Edenborn (with the New World Musical Ensemble founded by DMJ, Hannes Schauz and their self) with Songs For A New World (music, texts and book by Jason Robert Brown ), the theatrical song cycle, on stage in the Stuttgart Wilhelma Theater .

From January to March 2010 Verkaik was one of eight soloists at the “ Best of Musical Gala 2010 ”. The tour played across Germany and includes various musicals that are currently playing in Germany. From March 2010 to February 27, 2011 she played the role of "Elphaba" again - this time in the Metronom-Theater Oberhausen, where she performed with Anton Zetterholm and Carl van Wegberg, among others .

Since November 2011 Verkaik has been playing the role of "Elphaba" again. This time, however, she embodies the role in the Dutch version, which is performed there in Scheveningen .

On December 17, it was confirmed that Verkaik would play the role of "Elphaba" on Broadway from February 2013. She was engaged there until the end of May 2013. With the start of this engagement, Verkaik was the first actress to portray “Elphaba” in three different languages. From November 18, 2013 she took on the role of "Elphaba" again, this time in the London production at the Apollo Victoria Theater. She had to end this engagement prematurely on July 19, 2014 due to illness. In 2015 she played "Paulina" in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown at London's West End . In July 2015, Stage Entertainment confirmed that Verkaik will appear on stage as the mother monkey Kala in the Stuttgart musical Tarzan from late summer . She then returned to the West End of London , where from January 30, 2017 to July 2017 she again took on the role of "Elphaba" in Wicked . On July 22, 2017, Verkaik said goodbye to the role of "Elphaba", which she had played for ten years.

In the German and Dutch versions of the Disney film Frozen - Verkaik sings the role of Elsa. She also did this in the sequels The Frozen - Party Fever , The Frozen - Olaf Thaws and in The Frozen II . In the Dutch version, she also speaks the role.

From December 7th 2017 to October 7th 2018 Willemijn Verkaik played the leading roles Sam and Molly in Ghost - The Musical together with Alexander Klaws at the Theater des Westens in Berlin . From November 8th 2018 to March 31st 2019 she played "Sloane" in Bat Out of Hell at the Metronom Theater in Oberhausen .

From July 4, 2019 to July 14, 2019, Verkaik was on stage as "Peppa" in the Dutch version of the musical "Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown" at the CC Amstel in Amsterdam. Since November 5, 2019 she has been touring the Netherlands as "Miss Hannigan" with the musical Annie .
