Nuenen is a place in the municipality of Nuenen, Gerwen en Nederwetten (province of Noord-Brabant , Netherlands ), which is often also called Nuenen or Nuenen ca for short . With around 20,000 inhabitants, this district is also the largest in the municipality.
The name Nuenen comes from Nuenhem , which means new home .
In the 8th century a Germanic tribe lived in the place where Nuenen is today.
On December 4, 1300, Duke Johann II wrote a letter in which he determined that the land should be transferred to the residents of Nuenen and Gerwen as a fief . This letter has been preserved.
During the Second World War on September 20, 1944, during Operation Market Garden in Nuenen, there was fighting between the Americans (506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division ) and Germans (107th Panzer Brigade). The fighting during the war is part of the fourth episode of the miniseries Band of Brothers - We Were Like Brothers .
Vincent van Gogh lived and worked for two years (1883–1885) in Nuenen, where he developed his own style. He painted over 180 pictures, including his famous painting The Potato Eaters (De Aardappeleters) .
