Dorthy de Rooij

Dorthy de Rooij (born April 21, 1946 in Nuenen ; † December 16, 2002 ) was a Dutch organist , composer and music teacher .

Life

At the age of sixteen, Dorthy de Rooij became the organist of the Augustinian Church of the Marienhage monastery in Eindhoven and remained loyal to this position for over forty years despite foreign offers. They began in 1964 her organ studies with Albert de Klerk at the Conservatory in Amsterdam . In 1969 she passed her diploma summa cum laude . In 1972 she was awarded the Prix d'Excellence. Even during her student days, she was interested in early music from Spain, Portugal and Italy. So she first went to Lisbon, where she continued her training with Macário Santiago Kastner . In 1988 she recorded music by old Portuguese masters on the organ of the university chapel of Coimbra, which was restored in 1971/72 by the Dutch organ building company Flentrop . In addition to the Iberian, de Rooij also dealt with French music of the 20th century. Maurice Duruflé (Paris) was one of her teachers here .

De Rooij was a popular concert organist at home and abroad and was on the jury of various competitions. She gave organ lessons at the conservatories in Zwolle and Maastricht . In December 2002 she succumbed to a brief, serious illness and was buried in the cemetery of the Augustinian monastery in Marienhage in Eindhoven.

Awards
