Flentrop Orgelbau is a Dutch organ building company based in Zaandam . The metal and wood processing workshops are located in Koog aan de Zaan . The company has built more than 400 organs and exported numerous instruments since it was founded in 1903. In addition to building new organs, the company is also active in the field of restoration. In 2013 the reconstruction of the organ of the Hamburg main church Sankt Katharinen was completed.

history

Hendrik Wicher Flentrop (1866–1950) founded the company in 1903. Flentrop was an organist in Zaandam and founded a piano and organ company. He was a pioneer in historically oriented organ building. His aim was to restore organs to their original state instead of adapting them to contemporary tastes. From 1922 he was in contact with Albert Schweitzer . Father and son Flentrop were influenced by the movement of the organ and favored the mechanical action and the sliding chest .

In 1940 the son Dirk Andries Flentrop , who had learned organ building from Frobenius Orgelbyggeri , took over the management. Important organs were restored under his direction, such as the two organs of the Laurenskerk in Alkmaar , the Schnitger organ of the Sint-Michaëlskerk in Zwolle and the historic organ of the cathedral in Mexico City .

JA Steketee managed the company from 1976 to 1998 and increasingly received international orders, such as the largest organ in the Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago with over 71 stops on four manuals . His successor was Cees van Oostenbrugge. When he died in 2008, Frits Elshout took over the management of the company.
