Zaandam (also Saardam in German) is a town in the municipality of Zaanstad in the Dutch province of Noord-Holland , where around 77,440 people (as of January 1, 2018) live.
geography
Zaandam is located in the north of the Randstad metropolitan area , which extends over the provinces of Flevoland , Noord-Holland, Utrecht and Zuid-Holland and includes large cities such as Amsterdam , The Hague , Rotterdam and Utrecht . The Noordzeekanaal , which was laid out between 1865 and 1876 and connects Amsterdam and the IJ with the North Sea , begins on the southern outskirts of the city . The river Zaan , which crosses the city in a vertical direction, flows into the Noordzeekanaal in the south of Zaandam. The Zaanstreek region runs along the river, which includes the municipalities of Oostzaan , Wormerland and Zaanstad. The river courses of the Gouw and the Zaan form the western border of the city. In the east, Zaandam is separated from its neighboring towns by the A 7 and A 8 motorways . Westzaan , Koog aan de Zaan and Wormerveer , all of which are part of the municipality of Zaanstad, are located to the west and northwest of the city . Zaandam is delimited to the north and northeast by the municipality of Wormerland and its districts of Wormer and Wijdewormer , while the neighboring municipality of Oostzaan is to the east. The largest municipality in the Netherlands, Amsterdam, connects to the south.
Culture
Zaandam has several museums and churches as well as many monuments.
Museums
Zaandam gained worldwide fame through the open-air museum Zaanse Schans , which attracted 2.2 million visitors in 2017. It is known for its numerous mills and old wooden houses. The Zaanse Schans was founded in the middle of the 19th century when the industrial revolution reached the Zaan region. A characteristic working-class district developed in which working and living were combined. Construction of the open-air museum began in the second half of the 20th century: on September 12, 1961, the Stichting de Zaanse Schans was founded. In the following years, many houses and mills from the Zaan region were delivered to the Zaanse Schans, where they were rebuilt and restored. They wanted to represent the appearance of a typical residential area in the Zaan region. The museum serves to represent the historical heritage of the world's first industrial area.
The Zaans Museum, which opened in 1998, is also located on the Zaanse Schans . In the museum, regional exhibits are on display that showcase the living and industrial culture at the time of the industrial revolution. The cultural collection mainly consists of traditional costumes, traditionally painted furniture and everyday objects from the 19th century, while exhibits from local companies such as Albert Heijn , Bruynzeel and Verkade are predominantly on display from the industrial and cultural area . In 2015 the museum was able to acquire the painting “De Voorzaan en de Westerhem” by Claude Monet , which reproduces the typical appearance of the Zaan region. In addition to the museum exhibition, there are three other branches on the Zaanse Schans: the cooperage, the Jisper fisherman's hut and the weaver's house. In the center of Zaandam there are also the Zar-Peter-Haus and the Hembrug Museum , which are part of the Zaans Museum.
The bakery museum In de Gecroonde Duyvekater includes a bakery with a stone oven and a shop where old Dutch baked goods are sold. The museum is located on the Zaanse Schans and is housed in a wooden house from 1658 that is registered as a Rijksmonument .
The Zaanse Tijd Museum focuses on Dutch clockwork and includes a large collection of clocks. In the Zaanstreek, in the oldest industrial area in the world, the first watchmaking industry developed. The watchmaker Cornelis Michielszoon Volger created an inexpensive and easy-to-manufacture clockwork based on the technical structure of a mill as early as 1680, thus laying the foundation for the watch industry in the Zaan region. In the museum founded in 1976, besides the tradition of Dutch watchmaking, living and working on the Zaanse Schans in the 17th century is shown.
Churches
- The Westzijderkerk is a Protestant cruciform church that was built between 1638 and 1640 and extended to the west and east in 1672 and 1680. There is a portal on the east and west side of the church , which was built in 1680 and 1711 respectively. The organ was developed by the organ builder Johannes Duyschot .
- The Oostzijderkerk is a Dutch Reformed church with two aisles. The building, which dates back to 1685, has been rebuilt several times. During the last construction work in 1850, a church tower was erected on the northern nave. The colored windows date from between 1685 and 1701. The organ with two keyboards was built in 1863 by Pieter Flaes.
- The Lutherse Kerk is a rectangular church building from the years 1699 to 1700. The organ was built in 1737 by the German-Dutch organ builder Christian Müller .
- The Sint-Bonifatiuskerk is a Roman Catholic church designed by Albert Margry and Josephus Marie Snickers . The three-aisled cross basilica was built from 1899 to 1900 in the neo-Gothic style and has an organ with 16 registers by the Austrian organ builder Johannes Mitterreither .
- Other churches are the Oud-Katholieke Kerk (1695), the Church of the Doopsgezinden (1687), the Church of the Apostolisch Genootschap (1860–1861) and the Paaskerk (1955–1958).
traffic
Zaandam is connected to the northern environs and the major cities in the largest urban center in the Netherlands, the Randstad, by various types of transport .
air traffic
The nearest commercial airport within a radius of 25 kilometers is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer . With around 71 million passengers in 2018, it is the third largest airport in Europe . The Lelystad , Den Helder and Rotterdam The Hague airports are also in the immediate vicinity . There are also airfields in the municipalities of Castricum and Noordwijk .
Road traffic
The A 7 , which is of enormous importance for the provinces of Noord-Holland, Fryslân and Groningen, begins in the urban area . It connects the cities of Zaandam, Purmerend and Hoorn with Sneek , Heerenveen and Groningen in the north of the Netherlands. In addition, the A 8 crosses Zaandam, which runs from Amsterdam-Noord to Westzaan. From there it continues as a road to Uitgeest , where it connects to the A 9 . In Zaandam there are signposted access roads, so-called “stadsroutes”, which connect the various districts and higher-ranking roads, motorways and motorways. Four of the six feeder roads in the municipality of Zaanstad run through Zaandam.
In 2017 a cycle superhighway between Zaandam and Amsterdam was opened. The six-kilometer-long cycle path runs from the train station in the city center of Zaandam to the former shipyard of the Dutch shipbuilding company NDSM . At the destination of the route, cyclists can take the ferry to Amsterdam Centraal station . During the construction period, new cycle paths were laid out, existing paths were paved and widened, and a cycle bridge was built over a body of water in the municipality of Amsterdam-Noord. The cycle expressway connects to the existing transport network and was financed by a state grant, the Vervoerregio Amsterdam and the municipalities of Amsterdam and Zaanstad.
Rail transport
Zaandam is connected to the national local and long-distance transport network via the Den Helder – Amsterdam and Zaandam – Enkhuizen railway lines. The Zaandam train station is the busiest station in the municipality of Zaanstad. Eight Intercity trains and twelve Sprinter trains stop at the station every hour on weekdays. The station area in Zaandam has been under construction since 2018. A superstructure, which is to serve as a transfer for pedestrians and cyclists, is to be built above the track system and a new bicycle station. Furthermore, the station concourse is to be modernized and the appearance of the station adapted to the style of the houses in Zaandam. The completion of the project is planned for the end of 2019. Zaandam Kogerveld station , which opened on May 28, 1989, is located on the Zaandam – Enkhuizen railway line . It is frequented by 1,449 travelers every day (2017) and served by four Sprinter trains per hour from Leiden Centraal and Hoorn .
The Amsterdam metro network is not sufficient to Zaandam with for the year of 2019. The distance to the nearest underground stations Noord and Noorderpark in Amsterdam-Noord is several kilometers. There are plans to integrate Zaandam into the network. The Noord / Zuidlijn , which opened in 2018 and runs from the Noord underground station to Zuid , is to be extended. In October 2018 six council members from the municipality of Zaanstad asked the Vervoerregio Amsterdam to carry out a feasibility study. The parliamentary groups of DENK , GroenLinks , PvdA , PVV and VVD consider the decision to be a “sensible choice” ( Dutch understood keuze ), as housing construction in Zaanstad should be promoted in the future. Alternatively, a completely new subway could be built: The starting point is to be the Sixhaven subway station , which is to be located south of the Noorderpark subway station. The line is to run along the s 118 feeder road, pass the NDSM site, cross the A 10 motorway and end in Zaandam. Commissioning of the so-called "Zaan-IJ-lijn" is not planned before 2042.
Water transport
Zaandam is connected to Amsterdam's Westpoort district by ferry . The Zaandam pier is located in the south of the city in the Havenbuurt district . A ferry line 909 in the direction of the Hempontplein pier stops there every twenty minutes . During the night between 0.30 a.m. and 6.30 a.m., the line is replaced by line 913. The ferry traffic is operated by the municipal Amsterdam transport company GVB .
