Albert Heijn is mainly represented in the Netherlands, but also in Belgium and on Curaçao . From September 2012, the chain expanded to Germany with the AH to go branch model , although for logistical reasons only locations in neighboring North Rhine-Westphalia such as Aachen and Essen were opened. Most recently, there were six independently operated sales outlets in Düsseldorf , Duisburg , Cologne , Recklinghausen , Mönchengladbach and Straelen . Another five sales outlets were set up at petrol stations through a cooperation with Shell . In December 2017 it was announced that Albert Heijn was withdrawing from Germany. The petrol station shops will be closed at the end of 2017, the own branches by March 2018.

The company operates four different store models:

  • District suppliers ( wijkwinkel ) represent the largest number in the branch network with over 800 items, around 200 of which are operated as franchises . They are divided into size categories 1 (small) to 5 (large). Many stay open until 8 p.m., some even until 10 p.m. When the statutory Sunday rest was abolished in the Netherlands in 2012, most branches are also open on Sundays, but close at 5:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.
  • Albert Heijn to go are small shops in locations with high pedestrian traffic, especially at train stations, petrol stations and in city centers. At higher prices than in the other types of branches, they mainly offer products for immediate consumption or use, with often very long opening times (sometimes until midnight). In September 2018, the first two cashless tap to go stores with self-service checkouts were opened in Amsterdam .
  • Albert Heijn XL are very large stores that offer , in addition to a larger range, additional services such as a photo service and a recipe database . The concept provides for an "XL" market for each major city and the surrounding region, so far they have been in Alkmaar , Almere , Amsterdam , Arnhem , Assen , The Hague , Ede , Eindhoven (2 ×), Enschede , Heerhugowaard , Helmond , Hoofddorp , Kerkrade , Leeuwarden , Leiden , Maastricht , Muiden , Nijmegen (2 ×), Oostburg, Purmerend , Rijswijk , Roermond , Rotterdam (2 ×), Tilburg , Utrecht , Venlo , Vlissingen , Zaandam , Zoetermeer , Zwolle and in Zutphen .

Special offers

In addition to regular special offers and campaign weeks (for example Hamster Weken ), a free bonus card with a printed barcode is offered, which is scanned when paying at the checkout. You receive a bonus card in credit card format from which you can cut the barcode, if you want, and use it as a key fob. If the key is lost and the cardholder has registered his card, the finder can send the key in an unstamped envelope to Albert Heijn, from where it will be forwarded back to the registered keyholder free of charge. For foreign customers it is unusual that the current special offers are only valid in connection with the bonus card. As a rule, you receive the card immediately, so that you can use it for current purchases. In many Albert Heijn markets near the border, such as B. In Vaals , the registration form for the bonus card is also available in German; these forms are then also suitable for German addresses. At the service counter you get your bonus card immediately after filling out the form. This can be used immediately for shopping.
