Location and economy

Muiden is located at the confluence of the Utrechtschen Vecht in the IJmeer (a marginal lake of the IJsselmeer ), about 15 km east of Amsterdam , near the A1 motorway Amsterdam- Amersfoort . It borders the province of Utrecht . The place lives mainly from water sports tourism (marinas and shipyards). There is also some agriculture.

history

The place may have originated as a settlement at the mouth of the Vecht before the year 1000. Hence the name, which means mouth. Around 1200 it was owned by Gysbreght van Aemstel, who had received it as a fief from the bishop of Utrecht. Muiden became a bone of contention between Holland , Geldern and Utrecht . Floris V of Holland had the Muiderslot (Muider Castle) built a little north of the city in 1280. The castle had to be rebuilt around 1350.

Around 1500 Muiden was a poor fishing village with about 600 inhabitants. The Muiderslot was owned by Pieter C. Hoofts from 1609 to 1647 , but fell into disrepair after his death.

In the 17th century, the town was doing a little better thanks to the settlement of salt works and small shipyards. The flowering ended abruptly when the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal was opened in 1894 and the Vecht estuary was no longer important for shipping. The castle was restored in 1878 and turned into a museum. After the Second World War, water sports tourism gained in importance.

On January 1, 2016, the then independent municipality of Muiden merged with Bussum and Naarden to form the new municipality of Gooise Meren .

Attractions

Muiderslot (German Muiderschloss )

The Muiderslot (German Muiderschloss ), one of the most important architectural monuments in the Netherlands, is outstanding . The thick walls of the largely still medieval moated castle , which was also the setting in many films, protrude vertically from the moats. Inside it is furnished with furniture and other items from the PC Hooft era, i.e. the 17th century. The building can be visited every day from Easter to the end of October (on weekends only in the afternoon). The castle, which was restored again in 2006, has a historic orchard.

As mentioned above, Muiden is a water sports center, with several restaurants and cafes. If you want to sail the IJmeer from Muiderberg, you have to take into account that the water there is shallow.

In downtown Muiden there is a Herengracht, like in Amsterdam, but with much smaller houses than in the capital. The church from the early 15th century is also worth seeing. There are also other old reinforcements, including the remarkable “Muizenfort” (mouse fort).

Three kilometers from the coast in the IJmeer lies the fortified island of Pampus , whose fortifications from the years 1895 to 1940 have been restored by volunteers and can be visited in summer. Pampus used to be a notorious sandbar. A Dutch expression, “to lie in front of the pampus”, that is, to be unable to continue, still means: to be almost unconscious from exhaustion.
