Naarden ( fortress and a district of the municipality of Gooise Meren in the Dutch province of North Holland .
) is aLocation and economy
Naarden consists of two parts: the old fortress town and the villa quarters that were built after 1900 and form a whole with the neighboring Bussum . Naarden is located between the Gooimeer, which used to be part of the Zuiderzee , and the forest and heathland area " Het Gooi ". The city is located on the A1 Amsterdam - Amersfoort motorway , about 20 kilometers from both cities.
Tourism is the city's main source of income, although there is some industry and small business as well. Many commuters who work in Amsterdam live in Naarden .
history
Before the 14th century, Naarden was about three kilometers north of today's city, was destroyed at the beginning of the hook and cod wars and rebuilt as a fortified city (with city rights ) at the current location from 1350-1355 . From 1411 to around 1683 Naarden was a port town that was privileged to have extensive fishing rights. There was a flourishing textile industry in the 15th and 16th centuries.
The city was captured in the Eighty Years' War in 1572 by the Spaniards who murdered 700 residents after the city's surrender ( "Bloedbad van Naarden" ). In 1672 the French conquered Naarden in the Dutch War , and in the following year Wilhelm III won. from Orange-Nassau the city back. From 1675 to 1685 Naarden was transformed into a fortress town.
The famous Moravian pedagogue, theologian and philosopher Johann Amos Comenius lived temporarily in Naarden and was buried here.
When the municipality of Amsterdam bought the lake “Naardermeer” around 1905 and wanted to use it as a municipal waste dump, nature lovers, under the direction of Jac P. Thijsse, successfully protested against it. The acquisition of this first nature reserve in the Netherlands led to the establishment of the "Naturmonumente" association, which is still the most important nature conservation association in the country.
On January 1, 2016, the then independent municipality of Naarden merged with Bussum and Muiden to form the new municipality of Gooise Meren.
