The son of a gardener first attended the Hieronymus School in Utrecht and then the University of Leuven . In 1527 he appeared as a fourth grade teacher at the Hieronymus School in Utrecht. Since he displayed a free mindset in his teaching that was contrary to all superstitions, the people there called him a Lutheran priest . 1544 he became rector of the school in Naarden, 1557 he rejected a call to the Rector of the school in Delft from.
In 1572 he survived the conquest of Naardens by the Spaniards , supposedly because of his reputation as a scholar. His way of life has been passed down as not being impeccable, so he was accused of intemperance and had two sons as a priest.
