Bird sanctuaries are nature and landscape conservation areas that serve to protect wild birds .

The term is a common, also officially used abbreviation for European bird sanctuary (ESV; also special protection area , BSG, or English Special Protection Area , SPA). This according to the Birds Directive of the European Union territories specified together with the after the Fauna-Flora-Habitats Directive designated areas, the EU system of protected areas NATURA 2000 .

Bird sanctuary is also a non-binding collective term for all types of protected areas, the purpose of which is mainly to protect birds, in particular by maintaining their feeding, breeding, moulting, resting and wintering areas. In addition to protected area categories such as nature reserves designated under public law, these can also be areas appropriately dedicated by private initiative, e.g. B. in land owned by nature conservation associations. The so-called Ramsar protected areas are also effective as bird protection areas.

Area predicates awarded by nature conservation organizations can indicate the special importance of a bird sanctuary or the desirable designation of a bird sanctuary , e.g. B. the categories European Reserve or Important Bird Area . A special protective effect is not associated with this.
