regional customs

As in almost every town in the south of the Netherlands, Helmond has local customs and festivities. In the special case of Helmond, Carnival is known beyond the municipal, provincial and national borders.

Mardi Gras

The carnival takes place in Helmond as well as in Germany until Ash Wednesday. The well-known "Keiekletsavonden" take place from the beginning of the year to Shrovetide (see Büttenreden in Germany). On the last Saturday before Shrovetide, the grand finale is a gala ball.

On Mardi Gras Saturday, the mayor hands over his key for four days to the “Keiebeijters”, the largest carnival club in Helmond.

On Sunday the largest carnival parade in the Netherlands takes place in Helmond. This parade is attended by people from all over the south of the Netherlands.

The “Haringhappen” takes place on Wednesday evening. Herring is then served with side dishes in all taverns to commemorate the beginning of Lent .
