Wilhelmus de Bekker

Wilhelmus Adrianus Josephus Maria de Bekker (born April 27, 1939 in Helmond , Netherlands ) is a Dutch Roman Catholic clergyman and emeritus bishop of Paramaribo .

Life

After studying law , Bekker attended the Catholic University of Nijmegen , where he obtained a licentiate in anthropology . After completing his studies, he went to Suriname , where he worked on the Catholic Board of Education and was particularly committed to the Marrons and the descendants of the indigenous people in the interior. He also headed the "Pater Albrink" foundation. In Suriname he continued his ecclesiastical studies under the direction of the bishop and took part in a mission science study program at the University of Nijmegen.

In 1984 he was in the Netherlands as a deacon and on 25 May 1985 in Paramaribo for priests ordained . He then held the following offices: Parish Vicar , Head of the Catholic Board of Education , Vicar General and Administrator of the Diocese of Paramaribo .

In 1998 he was appointed a member of the Order of Orange-Nassau .

On November 12, 2004, he was appointed Bishop of Paramaribo. He was ordained episcopate on January 30, 2005, by the Bishop of Rotterdam , Adrianus Herman van Luyn SDB ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Port of Spain , Edward Joseph Gilbert CSsR , and the Archbishop of Kingston, Jamaica , Lawrence Aloysius Burke SJ .

On May 31, 2014, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
