Karel Marinus Choennie (born December 20, 1958 in Suriname ) is a Surinamese clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Paramaribo .

Life

Karel Choennie studied at the Catholic University of Nijmegen , where he obtained a degree in education. He continued his education at the regional seminary of St. Johannes Maria Vianney in Port of Spain and obtained a licentiate in pastoral theology from the Catholic University of Leuven . He received the sacrament of ordination on September 30, 1985 for the diocese of Paramaribo .

In addition to various tasks in the pastoral care of the parish, he was an episcopal vicar in the Paramaribo diocese from 1999 to 2003 . In 2001 he took over the leadership of the parish of St. Clemens in Paramaribo . In addition, he was Vicar General of the Paramaribo Diocese from 2005 to 2014 .

On November 11, 2015, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Paramaribo. His predecessor Wilhelmus de Bekker donated him episcopal ordination on January 24 of the following year . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Port of Spain , Joseph Everard Harris CSSp , and the Archbishop of Nassau , Patrick Christopher Pinder .
