The Archdiocese of Port of Spain ( Latin Archidioecesis Portus Hispaniae , English Archdiocese of Port of Spain ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Port of Spain . It was built in 1850 and covers the state of Trinidad and Tobago with a total area of 5,128 km² and 1,311,000 inhabitants, of which 288,000 are Catholics (22%).
history
Pope Leo X founded the Trinidad Territorial Abbey in 1516 , which was abandoned in 1650. Pius VII founded the Apostolic Vicariate of Trinidad on February 23, 1818 from cessions of territory from the diocese of Santo Tomás de Guayana .
On January 10, 1837 it gave due to the Breve "Ex munere pastoralis" part of its territory in favor of the newly established Apostolic Vicariate of Jamaica . On April 30, 1850, another part of the previous district was given to the newly established diocese of Roseau . At the same time it was elevated to a metropolitan bishopric. In the last third of the 19th century and in the first two thirds of the 20th century, pastoral care in the Archdiocese of Port of Spain was largely shaped by Irish Dominicans , from whose ranks the archbishops and a large part of the clergy came.
On February 20, 1956, the island of Grenada and the southern Grenadines were released to re-establish the diocese of Saint George's in Grenada .
