The Diocese of Paramaribo ( Latin Dioecesis Paramariboënsis , Dutch Bisdom Paramaribo ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Paramaribo in Suriname .

history

Pope Pius VII founded the Apostolic Prefecture of Dutch Guiana-Suriname on November 22nd, 1817 from cession of territory by the Mission sui juris Batavia . The Apostolic Prefecture was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate of Dutch Guyana Suriname on September 12, 1842. On May 7, 1958, it was given its current name and was elevated to the status of a diocese, immediately subordinate to the Holy See . With the papal bull Si quis mente on July 29, 1968 it was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Port of Spain as a suffragan diocese.

Since 1865 the Pope Pius IX trusted . the Mission in Suriname to the Redemptorists , who since then have provided all Vicars Apostolic. The best-known Redemptorist who worked as a missionary in Suriname was Peerke Donders (1809–1887), who worked in the Batavia leprosy colony on the Coppename River and was beatified in 1982 . In 1900 his bones were transferred from Batavia to a grave in the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral.

As a result of numerous consultations in 2001 and 2002, in which the diocese leadership, the Raad van Consultoren , the priestly council and the parishes were involved, the diocese gave itself a new structure with greater responsibility for the laity .

Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul , built between 1883 and 1885, is said to be the largest wooden Gothic church in the world. After years of difficult restoration work, the church building was ceremoniously put into use again on November 14, 2010 with a blessing mass and church consecration by Bishop Wilhelmus de Bekker.

After Pope Francis elevated the cathedral to a minor basilica, the basilica was inaugurated and blessed on April 6, 2014.
