In Catholic canon law, a consultor is referred to as a consultor ( Latin consultor , counselor), who exercises his office in different functions and at different levels in the church.

Roman Curia

In the Roman Curia , consultors act as advisors to the various dicasteries . The guidelines are set out in the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus Pope John Paul II of June 28, 1988. Clerics and lay people , "who are distinguished by education and cleverness, whereby, as far as possible, the point of universality should be observed", are appointed by the Pope for five years. They advise the respective dicastery individually in the form of written reports or work as a college.

Consultors in the diocese

At the level of a diocese one's college of consultors ( collegium consultorum ) from the Code of Canon Law compulsory. According to CIC can. 502 § 3 to be transferred to the cathedral chapter ; this is the case in all dioceses in the German-speaking area. The college consists of six to twelve members who the bishop freely appoints from among the members of the priestly council for five years. The head of the body is the diocesan bishop , in the case of vacancy the oldest priest of the college and, as soon as he is elected, the diocesan administrator . The bishop must involve the quorum in certain decisions. In the event of a vacancy, the college of consultors is involved in the appointment of a new bishop. After his appointment by the Pope, the diocesan bishop takes possession of his diocese in canonical form by presenting the apostolic letter relating to his appointment to the college of consultors in person or through a representative (CIC can 382 § 3).

Two consultors act as stewards of the diocesan clergy as assessors in dismissal and transfer proceedings of pastors and can be heard by the diocesan bishop . They are appointed by the diocese's council of priests . Until 1966 this was the office of Pfarrkonsultors ( parochi consultor ), which was renewed in 1983 canon law is not more. The parish consultor was elected for ten years by the diocesan synod on the proposal of the bishop .
