Jacobus Gerardus Schepers

Jacobus Gerardus Schepers (born August 18, 1798 in Dingden ; † November 27, 1863 ) was a German priest, apostolic vicar of Dutch Guyana-Suriname and titular bishop of Milopotamus .

Life

Born as the son of a tailor at the Küningsmühle in Dingden, he was drafted into the Russian campaign with two brothers in 1812 . In Mainz , the siblings deserted and fled to the Netherlands . There Gerardus stayed with a farmer who made it possible for him to study. Finally, on April 20, 1829, he was ordained a Redemptorist priest. From 1843 to 1852 he was the apostolic administrator of Dutch Guyana Suriname. He was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Dutch-Guyana-Suriname and Titular Bishop of Milopotamus on September 7, 1852. On a trip to Germany in 1854, he visited his birthplace and had himself photographed in Cologne on this occasion . On his return he died in 1863.
