The Coppename is a river in Suriname ( South America ), in the Sipaliwini district . It also partially forms the border between the Coronie and Saramacca districts .

River course

The Coppename originates in the Wilhelminagebirge . The source rivers consist of three branches, the right Coppename, which its water from the northeast slope of the Wilhelminagebirge, the Table Mountain and from the western slope of the Emma chain as well as the Linke-Coppename and the middle Coppename its water from the western and central north -The slope of the Wilhelminagebirge and the southeast slope of the Bakhuisgebirge received. Above the Tonckensfalls the three branches of the Coppename unite and it flows between the remaining mountains of the Hebiweri - and Krutu . Behind the Sidonkrutu - rapids he takes on the Adampadabach. The Adampadabach leads with the left and right upper reaches most of the water from the eastern slope of the Bakhuis Mountains. Behind the Langa rapids, the river bends to the east and, above the Raleigh Falls, joins the Tangimamabach, which rises in the northern foothills of the Emma range. The Raleigh Falls with the adjoining Voltz and Van Stockum Mountains form a tourist attraction that can also be reached with smaller aircraft via an airstrip. After taking in the Kwama stream, the Coppename flows further north and passes the Marron villages of Kaaimanston , Bitagron and Hédoti . In the old coastal plain, the river takes in the Wayambo , which forms a bifurcation with the Arawara between the river basins of the Coppename and the Nickerie . Finally, the important tributaries Tibiti and Coesewijne are included. The Coesewijne flows into the Coppename between the local village Kalebaskreek and the former leprosy station Batavia , below the east-west connection with a bridge. At the Coppename point, the Coppename joins the Saramacca and the rivers flow together into the Atlantic .

particularities

The Coppename has a river basin of approximately 21,700 km² and the length of the estuary is 150 km. The river is navigable for barges and smaller coastal vessels up to above the Wayambo estuary and when the water levels are not too low for motorized canoes as far as the Raleigh Falls. However, the navigability is hindered by sandbanks in the estuary and shallows near the village of Kalebaskreek.

exploration

The first intensive scientific research into Coppename was carried out by the Coppename expedition under Bakhuis in 1901 and the Saramacca expedition under Van Stockum from 1902–1903. Later, the investigations by the Centraal Bureau Luchtkartering (Central Office for Aerial Mapping) and the Geological Mijnbouwkundige Dienst (Geological and Mining Service) made the area more well known.

bridges

Bailey Bridge at Witagron

Two bridges lead over the Coppenname. The Bailey Bridge near the village of Witagron (also: Bitagron ) has been part of the south-east-west connection since 1976 . In 1999 the bridge of the north east-west connection between the towns of Boskamp in the Saramacca district and Jenny in the Coronie district was opened to traffic. This bridge is 1,536 meters long and 8.20 meters wide. A ferry connection existed here until completion.
